Science
At Read St. John's, we believe that science should inspire curiosity, encourage children to ask questions and help them to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. We aim to provide an exciting, practical and engaging science curriculum that enables all pupils to explore, investigate and discover.
We use Developing Experts to support the teaching and learning of science across the school. This provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, ensuring that children build upon their scientific knowledge, understanding and vocabulary as they move through each year group.
Our science curriculum places a strong emphasis on working scientifically. Children are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, observe closely, plan and carry out investigations, record and interpret results, and use evidence to draw conclusions. Practical experiences are an important part of our approach, giving pupils opportunities to apply their knowledge and develop their skills as young scientists.
Learning is carefully sequenced from the Early Years through to Year 6 so that key knowledge, vocabulary and scientific skills are revisited, developed and embedded over time. Through Developing Experts and wider enrichment opportunities, children are also introduced to real-life scientists and careers in science, helping them to understand how science is used in the world beyond the classroom.
We want our pupils to be curious, confident and enthusiastic scientists who enjoy finding out how and why things happen and who recognise the importance of science in understanding and caring for the world around them.
